In 1990, the Elizabeth Bagshaw Women's Clinic opened its' doors in the Hycroft Medical Building in Vancouver. A Vancouver Province story of September 18, 1990 documents various tenants of the building upset with having an abortion clinic on site. A group of pediatricians moved out of the building because "they don't think an abortion clinic goes hand-in-hand with children's health". As well, landlords had to deal with tenants upset that they were not notified of the abortion clinic's arrival - adding that other tenants were considering leaving as well.

LAWSUIT FROM PATIENT CLAIMING BOTCHED ABORTION

Court documents show in C940781 that a patient suffered an alleged "perforated uterus" after an abortion performed at the Elizabeth Bagshaw Women's Clinic. A number of defendants are unknown, but court documents confirm the involvement of Dr. Matthew Garrey. Bagshaw lawyer David Bellamy launched an aggressive defense claiming misinformation on the part of the female patient. The case has not proceeded and the lawyer for the woman patient withdrew from the case in 1995.

LAWSUIT BY ABORTION DOCTOR

On October 26, 1994, Dr. Nelson Savein sued the abortion clinic in B.C. Supreme Court he has/had worked at, the Elizabeth Bagshaw Society and clinic founder Norah Hutchinson, for the sum of $5,000 (Case No. C945786). This was a sum, according to the Statement of Claim, that was loaned by Savein to the abortion clinic. On November 23, 1994, the clinic responded by stating that the amount was paid back to Norah Hutchinson. Meanwhile, the court had already made a "Judgement in default of appearance" on November 14, 1994, ordering Norah Hutchinson to pay Dr. Savein back the $5,000 with interest and with costs. Hutchinson responded on November 23, 1994 stating that she was applying to have the whole action moved to the lower B.C. Provincial Court. We were unable to find any file there and are thus unable to determine if the $5,000 was ever repaid by the Bagshaw abortion clinic or Norah Hutchinson.
